SAT and Mother Tongue no longer a requirement for university admission
SINGAPORE : The Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Mother Tongue are both no longer required for university admission starting from this July.
This is the recommendation of a university admissions review panel.
Second year Junior College student Cheryl Foong is relieved as she does not have to resit her SAT for a better score.
She said: "I've spent in the effort studying it. I've put in the money to do it. So maybe they could include it but they should have like said it earlier."
A university requirement implemented only last year, the SAT is now scrapped.
Professor Chong Chi Tat, Chairman, University Admissions Review, said: "If we continue to impose SAT as a requirement for admission then we are really double-testing students and already we know that students are highly pressurised."
With the SAT out, A Level results will now make up 95 per cent of total entry score, 5 per cent coming from taking part in Co-Curricular Activities.
Another change is that Mother Tongue is now an optional entry requirement.
Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Acting Education Minister, said: "The Ministry continues to encourage all our students to go as high as possible, as far as possible in their Mother Tongue as they are capable of. But once you get to junior college, once you get to university, it's important especially for the universities that they are able to select students based on those who are most able to take advantage of a university education."
Tay Hui Ying, Student, said: "I don't understand why they are making so many changes."
"People will just be contented with passing the subject and nobody will put in effort to do well in the subject."
Jeremy Gan, Student, said "They just need to get a D7 and get into university and doesn't add much stress to them and on the other hand they also get their basic Chinese skills."
But there's another group cheering the changes - polytechnic students.
No more SATs.
Only about 70 polytechnic students made it into the local universities based on their SAT score last year.
And they won't need to have a relevant diploma, say a business diploma to apply for a business course.
"With the changes I might be considering going straight to the university first before going out to work," said one student.
Under the new system, apart from grades, faculties can have their own criteria like aptitude tests and interviews which will come under a faculty score.
While the recommendations take effect this year, the two universities, NUS and NTU, say they won't be implementing all of it.
For one thing applications for university admissions is just round the corner.
For instance, faculty score will not be a tool of assessment for students who are coming in in the July intake.
The universities will also have greater autonomy in admitting those with exceptional abilities like sportsmen who may not have the required grades.
Professor Su Guaning, NTU, Committee Member, said "It's not intended to rescue people because they are not so good at certain things but more to pick out those with a very composite all-round kind of excellence."
Up to 10 per cent of each intake will be set aside for such individuals. - CNA

went to make a pair of new specs just now coz mine snapped on wednesday.. ahh.. it survived in my pocket and pencil case for 3 yrs and now it just has to break! Ah.. rest in peace, little specs.. haha. Got myself a cool looking pair and some bad news.. apparantly, my astix on my left eye is more than 300.. and if they do change the lens accordingly, i'll feel giddy.. And they said that if i want get that fixed, i need treatment. TREATMENT.. treatment.. treatment.. gosh. i'm starting to hate this word. So for now, i'll have to use my right eye to help my left eye.. i think they call this problem 'lazy eye'. And i heard that if you have 'lazy eye' (my distant relative, my age has), you'll go straight to CLERK. hmm.. and there i was thinking of getting back to PES A and OCS.. hahaha.. but i really hope it's not lazy eye.. Will probably have to see a specialist soon..

JOKE!
John Smith was the only Protestant to move into a large Catholic neighborhood. On the first Friday of Lent, John was outside grilling a big juicy steak on his grill. Meanwhile, all of his neighbors were eating cold tuna fish for supper.
This went on each Friday of Lent. On the last Friday of Lent, the neighborhood men got together and decided that something had to be done about John, he was tempting them to eat meat each Friday of Lent, and they couldn't take it anymore.
They decided to try and convert John to be a Catholic. They went over and talked to him and John was so happy that he decided to join all of his neighbors and become a Catholic. They took him to Church, and the Priest sprinkled some water over him, and said, "You were born a Baptist, you were raised a Baptist, and now you are a Catholic."
The men were so relieved, now their biggest Lenten temptation was resolved. The next year's Lenten season rolled around. The first Friday of Lent came and just at supper time, when the neighborhood was setting down to their tuna fish dinner, came the wafting smell of steak cooking on a grill.
The neighborhood men could not believe their noses! WHAT WAS GOING ON? They called each other up and decided to meet over in John's yard to see if he had forgotten it was the first Friday of Lent?
The group arrived just in time to see John standing over his grill with a small pitcher of water. He was sprinkling some water over his steak on the grill, saying, "You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, and now you are a fish."

Valentine's day was spent sleeping at home the whole afternoon until Chim and fong hsien came.. spent the night at the poolside talking about everythig under the sun(or rather, the moon).. yeah.. quite well spent! Will be doing that again next sat coz it's fh's birthday so must try to book the billiard table now!
Went out with the clique today in the afternoon and boy, was i tired. slept at 5++ and woke up at 10 only to find out i have visitors. Met the the walid, evelyn and koustave at 1230 then the others by 1pm++.. haha.. As usual, we went to marche's.. and i couldn't eat any other thing except Rosti! It tasted really horrible that day.. very wet.. usually when i eat it, it's dry and crispy.
The toilet at marche sucks big time! Was pissing at the left most urinal and it automatically started flushing by itself, so water was filling up the urinal and IT WASN'T GETTING DRAINED OUT! So happyily, it flooded and overflowed from the urinal.. looked like some volcano.. scary shit.

Pippin's song lyrics - www.ezboard.com
Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still around the corner we may meet
A sudden standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!
Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run,
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn and nut and sloe
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!
Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
All shall fade! All shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And to bed! And then to bed!
- Bilbo Baggins, The Lord of the Rings

And he goes rambling again
YES. i've been saying alot of 'no's lately. Was asked to go out a few times by different groups of people and the answer is always.. 'i can't go coz of my wound', ' i can't go eat with you guys coz i still have to control my diet', ' mother said no '.
And this stinks to the core. i hate rejecting stuff. Like today, was supposed to go out with my classmates to celebrate Liting's belated birthday (postponed celebration coz of me), but in the end... i couldn't go coz mum said, " it's better not to go coz you are still under a controlled diet and u can't eat alot of things'.

i'm bored to TEARS.. and i really mean TEARS. Gosh. i have practically nothing to do. i've got no games to play and the shows on tv SUCKED BIG TIME. Depleted all my dvds and hmm.. vcds. After going to the polyclinic today for my daily change of dressing, i attempted to buy some games but WOW! the world is so kind.. the shop opens at 11am and it was 10am when i was there.. i couldnt' stay coz my mum has to go back home to prepare for work. So MISERABLY, i went home. And hell, i almost wanted to drag my wrecked body out of the house to clementi just to get a game but i couldn't get out of the house.
Life is being drained from me bit by bit, every second every minute every day. I feel VERY dull now coz of reduced human contact. can't blame me, my personality test (it's a proper one and not those internet cheap thrills(quizilla)) said that i was an extrovert and i need to be around people to 'recharge'.. gosh.
And YES, i'm still restricted on what i can eat. I've been eating porridge, beehoon, meesua, bread+tuna (gosh.. the only paradise food) for lunch almost everyday. Breakfast is BREAD.
I love to eat. AH.
Shoot me, somebody.
btw, does anybody happen to have Max Payne 2 or Prince of Persia: Sands of time?
Anybody knows of any pirated games stall ( yah i know, piracy is a crime.. yadda yadda yadda) in the west? coz i think the one at clementi central just got raided.

the best way to spend an afternoon is with friends at a teacher's house watching a movie and that's what i did! haha. Went to Mr Lim's house to 'bai nian', spent some time catching up with each other and watched Wishing Stairs.. it's freaky i tell u! really freaky.. Korean Horror is really freaky. haha. Anyway, hardly can everybody meet up coz most of them have jobs now and their schedules are quite packed so this was a very good time! haha. Xinyi and Liting are teachers now, Nicolyn and Joanne are working at nicolyn's mum's place, sandy working somewhere at boonlay.... haha.. Heard stories of being a relief teacher and it really made me think again about going into relief teaching if AXA has no place.. yeah.. haha. feel like doing something like digital graphics or even better, attach myself to some video editing firm. anybody got lobang?
